Pick the path that fits best with your character's style... If your style is to fight the hardest monsters possible... you'll want to focus on damage upgrades for your weapon... If your style is to avoid damage, focus on the protection upgrades... Support upgrades just raise your success chance overall, but every little bit helps.

Gambling is very dangerous... you can blow your complete savings, when you badly need to buy an upgrade and could just fight a few more monsters to earn it.

If you're like ekztal, then you're betting as much as possible to raise your overall gold earned total.

After I lost 1500000000g in a bad bet I was back at zero and fiqured I'd start over. Trying to get #1 in gold again at a lower level, I'd like to see a level 25-30 wrozen at #1.

I might have used up all my luck last time around.

P.S. I had way more than 4.2 billion gold but the ranking/gold was programming used an unsigned 16bit integer to store the number so the max is 4,294,967,295.
I wrote Damana about it and he fixed the Character Gold Max so it goes past 4.2billion but the ranking is still 16bit. (In case you were wondering.)

Secrets to having a long Hardcore character life:

If you love your character, you will set limits on how many wounds to take before going back to the Tavern (like slightly less than half). Get all the wound upgrades, all the trap avoidance upgrades. Get skills that overcome weaknesses in battle. Gamble less ... you need the equipment instead. Since you don't get character credits for Elite bosses when you're Hardcore, go cautiously in Elite locations and sub-locations and leave the sub-location if you have more than 4 wounds. One death is the end of the journey... so have your character live that way and you shall survive. Life comes first... greed is a very distant second.

This game is purely against monsters (NPCs). You can't battle other players directly.

However, you can compete against them in the rankings for experience and gold in competition groups. These groups provide no bonuses, but they list a smaller selection of the players with some common theme, which may give you added incentive to top them with your adventuring skills. Some of these groups are based on location, while others are purely a group of friends you know in RL or just met here in DragonTavern. Feel free to invent your own competition group with specific characteristics and invite others to join.

Yeah it is a Gary Gygax reference..., but I understand if they want to put up a Gygax tribute, seeing as he died in the last few months.

I'm in my early thirties..., but that won't stop me from having fun here heheh.

How about this one: Gygaxian Blather Prophecies...

    Gygaxian Blather Prophecies

I think someone has been reading up on too much of the D&D...

WOW! Is that a Gary Gygax reference? I'm impressed. I bet nobody else on the forum even knows who he is. I don't know how old you are but your age is showing and now so is mine. LOL
