It was past midnight by the time she returned to the dormitories.

Low lying fog settled into the streets, masking the night with a thickness that made it difficult for her to see more than a few feet. Her footsteps echoed off the wet cobblestone street and all around her petite figure, shadows flitted in and out of sight, relishing in the lack of moonlight.

Through the heavy damp air, one could see the midnight blue robe and a pair of pale hands as the wearer shifted her shoulders, trying to jerk the heavy material straight. She had worn everything from breeches and hand-me down shirts from elven pants to tunics; this bulky robe was one thing she hadn’t adjusted herself to. Again, the girl muttered under her breath as she reached up to shrug the navy robe in place once more - the Ridgewood Academy’s gold emblem flashing in the gloomy night.

The fog was slowly rising.

In a few hours it should shroud the Academy in its entirely, as it had with the streets, but the young girl paid no heed to the fog, having trudged this path many nights. Even now, as the fog threatened to completely engulf the streets within the Isle of Mists, the young girl expertly maneuvered the streets with alacrity.

Her hands reached out for the heavy door and she toppled into the girl dormitories. By the time she reached her room, her head was aching and her eyes burned. Unable to muster strength for anything else, the young girl was asleep before her head even met her pillow…

* * *

”Legacy!” A high-pitch voice squealed just seconds before an avalanche landed onto her back, making the sleeping girl yelp in surprise as she was brutally awakened.

”Oops, sorry…” The weight lifted off and Legacy Mier deGrey was able to breathe, slowly cracking one eye open as she rolled over face-up.

Light filtered through the arc’d window by the far end of the room; a table was pushed against the open window, the morning light casting a warm glow upon the stack of books neatly placed upon the table. Beside it was a pitcher of water and a tin mug, overshadowing her ink and quill.

She felt her bed bounce and her other eye opened. Gradually, drowsy turquoise eyes focused upon the Elven girl peering down at her with excitement. As usual, not a hair upon Elwinga Arwen Isólith’s head was out of place as she beamed down at her best friend. Still blinking the sleep out of her eyes, Legacy did not miss the wrinkling of a delicate nose as Elwinga quickly retreated to the far end of her narrow bed.

”Ugh! What were you doin’ last night?” The girl asked, her hands fluttering in the air.

Legacy glanced down at her clothes, realizing she had fallen asleep before she could change. Cautiously, she sniffed her wrinkled tunic, the musty scent of the catacombs filling her nose. She, too, made a face, only interrupted by a yawn. With a groan, she untangled herself from the sheets and swung her legs onto the ground.

”A’v had a long night,” She mumbled in reply, rubbing sleep from her eyes. ”Still need to flesh out my research ... wot with the deadlines approaching...” Upon remembering her long nights pouring over the ancient texts kept within the deep walls of the catacombs, Legacy sighed.

Elwinga patted her arm amiably, her own face pulled in a elegant frown.

”Ye still haven’t found a subject for your concentration?” Pursing her lips, she began to rattle a few subjects off her mind. ”What about history? You can study to be a cartographer? Or…I know! Herbology! You could be a healer like me-”

Legacy groaned and buried her face back within her pillow.

”Spare me Ellie… Ye know I kin hardly navigate meself within the catacombs, let alone draw ye a map of the Wastelands.“ Striding to her trunk, Legacy threw the lid open and rummaged for a new set of clothes. “-And the last time a’v been ta class with ye... I accidentally killed mah Poisonberry Cactus - they're are suppose ta be invincible!”

Elwinga fell silent, her eyes anxiously upon her friend. Rising to her feet, Legacy made a face, then stretched, ignoring her protesting muscles. Spending hours bent over a tombs of books is taking a toll on my shoulders, she thought wryly. At this rate, mah bones ache more then that old groundskeepers Farpodius. Glancing at the light glow of sunshine upon Elwinga's skin, Legacy sighed inwardly -her skin was pale and pasty, no doubt from spending her entire mornings navigating the antechambers of the gloomy catacombs. Bones, I'll turn into a ghost if this keeps up...

”A'h don't suppose they are hirin' at the archives,” She said with a wry grin, ”At this rate ah'll read the entire collections of texts within the catacombs before summer end!"

Her own chuckles joined that of Elwinga's twinkling laughter.

"Well, a'h suppose we best git ready and head down ta breakfast…” Legacy said, pulling out a fresh set of clothes.

Elwinga nodded.

Moments later, she was striding alongside the elven girl as they entered the dining hall. Legacy was no taller then Elwinga, perhaps less, but beside her friend, she felt like a frump. The elven girl was slender with a tiny waist and slightly wide hips, from which her long butter cream satin skirt gracefully fell from. Her matching vestment scooped beneath her blossoming bosom covered in a white linen shirt. Long dark chestnut tresses were pinned back on each side with matching combs shaped like forest leaves.

All in all…Elwinga excluded an effortless elegance Legacy only dreamed of achieving.

Even now, as Legacy followed the elven girl gliding through the doorway, she tripped and stumbled in her step. Hands flew out in alarm and the poor girl barely caught her balance against the frame of the entrance way. Face burning, she could hear the snickers of the entering students behind her.

Cursing her own clumsiness, she hurried after an oblivious Elwinga, eyes already searching for their table.

”Ooh look! There’s Katie from potions class - and the others!” Elwinga’s hand shot into the air and waved at someone in the distance. Reaching over, she hooked her arm with Legacy and weaved through the crowds with single-minded determination.

"Oi Ellie, slow down," She managed ta say, just as they approached their destination. Katie McLaughen was already eagerly shooing the others further down the bench, clearing a space for the newcomers. Flashing the others a grateful smile, Legacy sunk in...

On a verdant carpet of grass thick and springy with new growth the breeze drifted mournfully, sifting the stalks in a wave as if greeting the now rising sun. A damp fog clung wearily to the ground with desperate hands, as if unwilling to be banished by the rising tide of the day’s heat. Dripping wet from having just dumped a bucket load of cold water on himself, Quiche shivered lightly as the refreshing coolness of it ran down his cooling body. Sighing softly the young boy approaching manhood looked around the training grounds. He could see others beginning to filter in now for their morning exercises. Normally Quiche would have stayed for a chat… but not this morning. He had been thinking, contemplating about his life.

There was never a doubt on what he was to do. His family had been with the Sky Guards for generations, there was nothing else he wanted to do. But it stuck in his caw to watch other students with their bonded. He could see the Great Eagles, Wyverns and other bonded flapping about the fields at their person. Quiche had no idea why none of them had bonded to him, but he did know his time of choosing was near past. If none of the greater beasts bonded with him soon he would be forced to give up, and Quiche did not know if he could bear that shame. Right now though he had enough trouble in the person of Sven; despicable lowly Sven. Sven with his Greater Eagle, Sven with his constant… jokes… Sven and his Lordling father and his fast cash. Even now he could hear his voice booming out, his snorting laugh echoing across the training field. It was all Quiche could do to grit his teeth and storm on as yet another overly loud ‘joke’ about those without bonds was told. A fight now was not what he needed, and so all he could do was ignore and walk on.

Still steaming from the close encounter, Quiche finally reached the main campus of Ridgewood Academy. There were many others about now as the sun had risen and students of every ilk hurried to and fro for their morning business. Most though were in robes of one sort or another and Quiche felt as exposed as every other time he came here. His was a small department, although Ridgewood was an elite preparatory school and had a well distinguished section on martial skills, their focus was more on less… rigorous paths. So Striding along in his armour and sword, Quiche was very much like a sore thumb. Striding as fast as his legs could take him the sudden smell of food wafted through the morning air to strike. A loud growl began to grow from the pit of his stomach as the exertions of the morning began to take noticeable effect. A slow blush began to form on the young man’s face as those students around him looked at him peculiarly. A small smile and he was off.

Darting through the crowd Quiche spun twisted and ploughed his way through the crowd to stumble into the dining hall. Looking around he saw his friend Edasi already at table already with a group of others. The young mage was discussing animatedly with Katie about something or other and its effects on the magical field. Truth be told, Quiche attended some of those same classes but having not much talent in them… well the subjects became less then riveting. Shuffling quietly onto the table Quiche propped his sword on the bench and began tucking in whilst listening to the group debating. Sometimes he wondered how he had this group of friends. They were so different, he being the only Sky Guard potentiate among these mages, healers, wizards and other career to be. His thoughts were beginning to slide into melancholy once again as Katie suddenly leapt up and began waving and shouting.

Taken by surprise, Quiche nearly choked on his mouthful of eggs and just barely managed not to spit everything out. As it were still, he nearly jumped out of his skin and also managed to choke as well. Glancing up with tears of almost pain and a hacking cough, Quiche felt Edasi pounding mightily on his back. Up and up and up… he saw long graceful legs coming to a halt in a swirl of skirts then the beaming face of the radiant Elwinga grinning down at him. A blush began to blossom on the warrior to bes face as he quickly averted his eyes from the youthful girl’s eyes; only to fall on those of Legacy… What could he say… she was slightly shorter then Elwinga perhaps, a bit bookish and pale and clumsy at times but she made him smile. Things seemed to stop for a moment before the desperately shooing hands of Katie penetrated his addled mind. Sliding quickly over to give room to the pair Quiche suddenly grinned and felt his day getting better.

“Good Morning Elwinga, you look as radiant as ever. Did you do something with your hair? I swear tis, almost as if you have hidden the blessed sun within you! You are shining!!! And Legacy… hmmm…”

Reaching over Quiche grinned and picked off what seemed to be a bit of dust and cobweb from her hair.

“Have you been raiding the catacombs again? You know you really should spend more time up with me… us here…”

”Good morning Quiche”

Elwinga laughed, the sound carrying rich music over the hubble of the dining hall. Already seated, Legacy tilted forward, her hand reaching for a plate when she felt a slight tug on her hair. Glancing up sharply, she looked at Quiche with a look of annoyance, then chagrin.

“Have you been raiding the catacombs again? You know you really should spend more time up with me… us here…”

”Oi,” She mumbled, leaning back to shake her hair out. Pale, slender fingers frantically combed the dark locks as she shot Elwinga a deadly look. ”A’h thought I brushed these out…”

Elwinga gave her friend a cursory glance. ”It looks fine,” Elwinga insisted, giving Quiche a quick glare before grabbing a clean plate. She begun heaping a generous serving onto the ceramic surface for Legacy. ”Let’s eat first! What is everyone doing today?” She asked excitedly, as Legacy pulled her hair into a neat tail before digging into her food.

”Thanks Quiche,” The young girl muttered, before she bent her head over the eggs upon her plate. ”A’h dunno Ellie, I might go back to the catacombs. There’s this section…” Her voice trailed off as she took a bite, her face thoughtful and missing the fallen look upon her friend’s face.

”Well…” Katie leaned over the table and tilted her freckled face forward to look at Legacy. ”Do you have to go today? We’re all going riding after breakfast., The girl paused, raking a disapproving eye over Legacy’s pale face and the shadows under her eyes. ”You should come with us, it’ll do you good you know.”

Sitting between the two girls, Elwinga nodded solemnly.

Legacy looked up. For a moment, she simply sat there chewing as she stared at her row of friends bobbing their head in unison. She quickly swallowed before bending forward in laughter, spilling her hair around her face.

”Bones! I dunnae know why I put up wit ye all,” She managed to choke out between laughter. ”All right all right, I’ll go wit ye…” She said, shaking her head good naturedly at the others. ”A’h dun suppose da school stables ‘ve spare ‘orses fer us?” She asked, taking a bite of her buttered toast.

”Aye, there be horses,” Edasi answered and she nodded absentmindedly, before returning her efforts to finishing her meal.

She missed the wink Edasi threw Elwinga…

The feeling of the early morning tenseness dissipated from his aching shoulders with the blossom of a heartfelt smile upon the boy’s face. The frown which marred Quiche’s face relaxed and spread wide into a smile that lit up his twinkling eyes; seeming to take away all the worry from him. Giving Elwinga a friendly wink as he saw how worked up Legacy became with the cobwebs Quiche tried his best not to burst out into laughter. Letting the two slide in, the young boy gave Legacy a friendly Nudge before falling upon his heaped food with a renewed frenzy. Now that his gloomy mood of before had past, he suddenly felt ravenous.

Meanwhile over their heads Edasi and Katie had resumed their talk about the last mage class. With his ears half closed the young warrior could only watch in bemusement as the debate began to draw others into the conversation. Out of the corner of his eye, Quiche could see his friend Edasi puffing up like a peacock and trying to not appear nervous or unsure. He also saw his friend casting many a furtive glance at Elwinga and to see if she was watching him. It was all Quiche could do to control himself and not fall out of his chair laughing. Soon though the food began to disappear and Quiche had sat back himself speaking once or twice about magic as he understood it. Suddenly the topic about their planned field excursion came out and it was all Quiche could do to keep from breaking out in a grin.

Winking at Edasi as he responded to Legacy’s question, Quiche picked up from his best friend and continued in a mildly deceptive tone.

“Don’t you worry about a single thing Legacy; it has all been taken care of. I’ve found you an especially mild mannered mare who I expect you will take an instant liking to. Trust me; you won’t want to miss this… It’ll be… fun, yes fun!”

Bursting out into a massive grin now as they walked down the paved stone pathway, Quiche looked onto the group positively beaming and adjusted his belted sword slightly once more so that it rode on his hip more comfortably. As they passed through the old buildings of the campus, the group came into a sparser area that had more vegetation and seemed to be filled with an abundance of wildlife in it. The distant caw of birds and flap of wings became louder as they walked deeper into this park area. Verily the strong neighing sounds of hoofed steeds could be heard through the crisp morning air. All of a sudden the group came out of the cover of trees into a vast clearing as a sudden WHOOOSH of flapping wings and neighing horse flew past above their heads to land gracefully on the field.

“Ladies and gents - our rides. The Pegasus have kindly agreed to take us for a ride during their morning exercises. A rare chance this, the Pegasus aren’t known to be this free with letting people ride them. So let’s hurry and enjoy ourselves!”

Grinning like a loon, Quiche snatched randomly at Legacy’s arm and began pulling her and the group towards a small cluster of waiting Pegasus. Their wings of feather and their coats of white shone brilliantly, gleaming like a living breathing jewel…

It was a lovely day on the Isle of Mists.

By the time they’ve finished their meal, the sun had fully raised and t’was noted that the day was a cloudless one. She felt her lips bow up as she joined the others, chattering amiably as they exited the main hall; the hall was filled with noises of rushing feet. Everywhere, initiates, apprentices and students were hurrying for the exits, all eager to participate in the beautiful weather.

She listened as Katie went through the list of plants she needed to finish her Catiwall experiment for potions class. The other girl simply lit up when she worked around plants…even now, her face was animated and her hands gestured in the air as she described something to the two girls keeping pace beside her. Legacy simply nodded and smiled as she looked down at Kati. Out of the group, Kat was the most petite; her bright hair cropped short, her eyes long-lidded, tilted at the tips, and enormous. The ends of her hair was tucked behind two delicate pointed ears and her skin was a soft olive-tone complexion.

Beside Elwinga, Edasi kept interrupting, offering suggestions. More then once, Legacy caught the boy darting glances towards Elwinga, checking to see if she was paying attention. Turning her head, Legacy smothered a snicker. It didnae take much to see the boy’s infatuation with Elwinga and quite frankly, when she asked the elven girl about it one day…

”Who Edasi? Don’t be silly Legacy, he’s just trying to be nice.”

Her mind began to roam as her feet continued to follow the others. Though she didnae show the others, she still needed to finish her reading…find a concentration. Time wasnae on Legacy’s side; while the others were happily choosing their area of expertise, she was still wavering. Was it her fault didnae know what to do with her life? Was it her fault she didnae really show talent in anything, despite constant encouragement from the Elders and her friends? Was it her fau-

She huffed at herself.

Technically, it was her fault…which just made it all the more annoying. Just choose something already! Her mind screamed at herself... She wasnae lazy and working didnae frighten her…but somehow she simply couldnae settle. No one knew what to do with her, least herself. Her parents had such high expectations too…

She sighed.

She didnae want to fail them.
She didnae want to be forever known as the feather-brained Legacy…

Blindly, she followed the others, lost in her own thoughts. T’was the nicker that broke her reverie…or perhaps t’was the woosh! that followed the nicker that caught her attentions. Either way, Legacy’s chin shot up and her feet came to a stop.

Nay…

“Ladies and gents - our rides. The Pegasus have kindly agreed to take us for a ride during their morning exercises. A rare chance this, the Pegasus aren’t known to be this free with letting people ride them. So let’s hurry and enjoy ourselves!”

Wordlessly, the girl stood rooted in her spot, eyes blinking in disbelief at the winged creatures before her. They were majestic, the width of their shoulders wide enough to fit several eager students. Their coats glistened under the morning sun and a few of them tossed their manes back, silvery spray much like the ocean water that foamed upon the edges in the Isle of Mists. However…that wasnae what the girl’s eyes were focused upon…

Trembling upon the gleaming white backs of the horses, were trembling feathered wings.

”Oooh they are beautiful, aren’t they?” She heard Katie exclaim, her hands clasping together in delight.

”B-Beautiful?” She started to back away from the monsters. As if sensing her unwillingness, Quiche suddenly grabbed her arm and begun to drag her nearer.

”Oi LET me go Quiche,” She forced the words through clenched teeth and dug her heels into the ground. If anything, her face turned more terrified as she was brought closer to those creatures.

Shocked, it took everything not to shriek like a child, when one of these gleaming death-traps nudged her chest...
